It’s Women in Construction Week and Pacific Building Group is proud to celebrate the women who greatly contribute to San Diego’s built environment.
Among them is Pacific Building Group Project Manager Susie Slater, a UC San Diego graduate and Pacific Beach resident. Susie is a California licensed structural engineer, an incredibly rare designation for a construction project manager to have. In fact, she’s one of less than 7,000 people to have achieved this title in the state’s history.
Susie is a part of the community of women who make up 9.1 percent of the construction industry in the United States. Though women in construction are the minority, this percentage has drastically risen from 1.3 percent in 2015. This is evident at Portside Pier, a significant project well underway at The San Diego Embarcadero, where women including Susie, are making waves. Joining her are Valerie Granger, structural engineer at PK Associates Consulting, Cynthia Stansbery, project manager at Encore Steel, Andrea Viteri, project engineer at Moffatt & Nichol, and Beatriz Viedma Cabrera, architect at Archmony Design.
“It was rare to see women have these key roles in this industry, even just five years ago,” says David McNiff, Susie’s coworker and a senior project manager at Pacific Building Group.
Susie, along with her fellow female and male coworkers and colleagues, work tirelessly at Portside Pier to overcome daily challenges, such as keeping sea life safe during construction, carefully delivering materials without a staging area and managing traffic and noise in a heavy tourist area.
Beyond the Pier, Susie has a significant impact on other local Pacific Building Group projects, like the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Walkabout Australia habitat. The immersive 3.6-acre habitat that’s home to wallabies, cassowaries and other animals including a tree kangaroo, recently won a Unique Special Project Merit Award at the Build San Diego Awards hosted by the Association of General Contractors of America, Inc., San Diego Chapter.
Kudos to Susie and all the women who are leading our industry this week – and every week!
